Bring Spring to your lawn
Added by calmyourbeans
|
Your lawn is mostly dormant throughout the winter but spring is when you can bring your grass back to life. Apply a lawn feed at the beginning of Spring so that it grows strong and vigorously. This will ensure it is protected from the moss, draught and weeds that try to compete over the Summer months.

Look when you are trimming the hedge
Added by calmyourbeans
|
Before you start trimming your hedges back it's essential to take a careful look first. Young birds could be nesting their young in the hedges and you might not want to disturb their habitat.

Carrot flies
Added by calmyourbeans
|
Carrot flies are one of the most problematic pests for most crops, especially carrots (hence the name). Carrot fly-infested crops are inedible. Protect your newly-grown crops from carrot flies by covering them with an insect-proof mesh. You can secure the mesh down at the edges with some rocks and soil.

Protect your strawberries
Added by calmyourbeans
|
Lovely, lovely strawberries. They are fantastic as they are easy to grow, give plenty of fruit and are the perfect snack in the summer, juicy and sweet. If you are growing them you should think about protecting them. Birds are particularly fond of strawberries so to protect them from these pesky pests surround the plants with straw and matting, then cover with nets. That'll keep them at bay!

Temperature control for your greenhouse
Added by calmyourbeans
|
In the hotter summer months it's very likely your greenhouse will get extremely hot, which might have a negative effect on the plants inside. To avoid these fluctuations in hot and hotter temperature apply some simple shading. Wooden blinds are the best way to shade your greenhouse as they won't increase the temperature any more inside. It's also a good idea to open the windows, if possible, or open the greenhouse door for ventilation.

Dead heads
Added by calmyourbeans
|
Encourage plants to store energy throughout the Summer by removing the dead heads of your Spring-flowering bulbs. This will ensure they don't waste energy on seed production.

Clean out the pond
Added by calmyourbeans
|
If you have a pond it will most likely have been neglected over the winter months. The increase in temperature during Spring and Summer will increase the growth of algae, causing the pond to turn green and cloudy. The growth of oxygenating pond plants will help to clear out the water. If you want to speed this process up add a string bag of barley straw into the pond which will use up the excess nutrients and reduce the level of algae. Make sure to remove the barley straw within 6 months.

Don't let the roses go black
Added by calmyourbeans
|
If you are an avid rose-grower be aware that roses are very sensitive to temperature change, and especially the diseases and insects that come along with the temperature. Spray your roses with 'Rose Clear' to keep aphids and blackspot at bay.

Protect the young-uns
Added by calmyourbeans
|
If you planted any trees or shrubs last Autumn or Winter make sure to water them regularly during the Spring and Summer months. The little young ones won't have fully developed roots yet and will benefit with a little added water that they might not be able to reach with their roots. For more tips and advice, visit the Royal Horticultural Society website.
